Nick Donohue Sports Medicine - MD

Dr. Nick Donohue is a board-certified, fellowship-trained interventional pain physician who specializes in a variety of interventional procedures for the treatment of low back and neck pain, joint inflammation, and nerve pain.

Dr. Donohue is originally from Iowa and attended the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) for medical school. He then completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City before returning to MCW for his residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and fellowship in Pain Medicine. He authored ten peer-reviewed publications during training and made multiple presentations at local and national conferences on their findings. His leadership skills were recognized when he was elected chief resident in his final year of residency.

Dr. Donohue’s personal history as a patient motivated him to pursue a subspecialty in treating patients with painful spine and joint-related pathology. As a young athlete, he underwent years of treatment for a shoulder-related injury which led to surgery when he was 17 years old. In his mid-20’s, a childhood low back injury progressed significantly, impacting his physical functioning and overall quality of life. As a patient, he underwent months of physical therapy as well as many of the injections he performs today. Dr. Donohue’s personal experiences as a patient led him to seek a career in interventional pain medicine and guides his experiences with patients who are going through many of the same challenges due to their injuries.

At AIC, Dr. Donohue performs many X-ray guided procedures, including epidural injections, joint injections, and radiofrequency ablation. Ultrasound-guided nerve blocks or muscle injections also provide many patients with significant relief and can be performed in the clinic setting.
